Mounjaro and Keto: Why I Think Combining Them Is a Mistake

Keto helped me lose weight very quickly. I lost seven stone in seven months, and at the time people saw that as a huge success.

From the outside, it looked impressive. The scales were dropping rapidly, clothes were getting smaller and people kept telling me how well I was doing.

But I felt miserable.

I was exhausted, eating very few calories and cutting out almost all carbohydrates. I was even encouraged not to exercise, which now seems completely ridiculous to me.

I had lost a lot of weight, but I had not learned how to eat normally. I had simply become very good at following another extreme diet.

Keto made my relationship with food worse

Before keto, I already had an all or nothing relationship with food. I was either fully committed to a strict diet or I felt like I had completely failed.

Keto made that mentality worse.

It taught me to fear carbohydrates and divide food into good and bad categories. Bread, pasta, potatoes, rice and fruit became things I believed I needed to avoid.

One meal outside the plan could make me feel as though I had ruined everything.

That is not a healthy or sustainable relationship with food. It is restriction dressed up as discipline.

The problem became obvious when I stopped following keto. The weight came back because I had learned nothing about portion control, balance or how to manage normal meals.

I knew how to follow keto. I did not know how to live without it.

Why keto can feel easier on Mounjaro

Mounjaro can reduce appetite and food noise, which may make it easier to follow a very restrictive diet.

You may feel less hungry, eat much smaller portions and find it easier to avoid entire food groups.

But just because something becomes easier does not mean it becomes a good idea.

A GLP1 medication can create an opportunity to step away from the extreme diets that repeatedly failed in the past. It can give you space to make calmer decisions around food and build habits that feel more manageable.

Using that opportunity to follow an even stricter version of keto may simply replace one unsustainable approach with another.

Mounjaro should not become a tool for extreme restriction

I do not think Mounjaro should be used as a way to eat as little as possible.

Eating very few calories may lead to faster weight loss, but faster does not always mean better. You still need enough nutrition to support your health, energy levels and muscle.

You also need to think about what happens later.

What have you learned if your entire plan depends on eliminating carbohydrates and relying on medication to make the restriction easier?

What happens when your dose changes, your appetite increases or you decide to stop taking the medication?

A successful weight loss journey should help you build habits that can continue outside the most intense period of weight loss.

This time I have done things differently

During this weight loss journey, I have continued to eat carbohydrates.

I eat bread, potatoes, rice, fruit and other foods that I once believed needed to be removed completely.

I have also trained consistently throughout the process and made protein a priority. Nothing has been completely off limits, and I have not spent the journey waiting for the diet to end.

I am now 12 stone lighter, and I have never felt as deprived as I did while following keto.

That does not mean every day has been perfect. It means I have been able to eat in a way that feels much closer to normal life.

For me, that is far more valuable than following a plan that produces fast results but cannot be maintained.

Carbohydrates were never the real problem

Carbohydrates did not cause my weight problems.

My bigger issue was repeatedly choosing diets based on extreme restriction. I would follow them perfectly for a period, lose weight and eventually reach the point where I could not continue.

Once the diet ended, I had no sustainable habits to fall back on.

It was not bread, pasta or potatoes that caused that cycle. It was the belief that I needed to remove them completely in order to succeed.

This time, I have learned that I can include carbohydrates, enjoy meals, train properly and still make progress.

The goal should be to build normal eating habits

Mounjaro can make weight loss easier to manage, but the medication is only part of the process.

This is an opportunity to learn how much food your body needs, how to build balanced meals and how to stop eating without feeling deprived.

It is also a chance to remove the guilt attached to certain foods.

You should be able to eat a meal containing carbohydrates without believing you have failed. You should be able to enjoy a meal out without turning it into a full weekend of overeating.

Those are the skills that can make weight maintenance more realistic later.

Is keto always wrong?

Some people enjoy eating fewer carbohydrates and feel that it suits them. I am not saying that everyone needs to eat the same way.

There is also a difference between reducing carbohydrates and following a strict ketogenic diet that removes most of them.

My concern is when someone combines Mounjaro with extreme restriction because they believe they need to lose weight as quickly as possible.

Based on my own experience, rapid weight loss means very little if the plan leaves you exhausted, miserable and unable to maintain the result.

My view on Mounjaro and keto

Keto made me lose weight quickly, but it did not improve my relationship with food.

It reinforced my all or nothing thinking and left me dependent on a set of rules I could not follow forever.

Mounjaro has given me the opportunity to do things differently. I have eaten carbohydrates, trained consistently and built a way of eating that feels much more sustainable.

I do not believe carbs were ever the problem.

Unsustainable diets were.
